About You: 
A successful Urban Forestry Arborist will communicate well, be reliable, safety conscious, and possess a strong work ethic. Our ideal candidate can operate an aerial lift truck, articulate (knuckle-boom) a loader truck, bobcat, dump truck, chipper, chainsaw and various hand tools as well as utilize tools unique to arboriculture such as knots and rigging, pulleys and belays.

This role has on the job training opportunities such as obtaining an International Society of Arboricultural Arborist certification, technically training in tree trimming and gaining NC Work Zone traffic control experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs expert tree care, including pruning, crown restoration, and other maintenance tasks, utilizing both climbing techniques and aerial lift equipment while adhering to ANSI Z133.1 and A300 standards and maintaining a safe and organized work environment
  • Contributes to safe and efficient tree removals, including hazard assessments, stump grinding, and debris management, employing cranes and aerial lifts as needed
  • Shares arboricultural knowledge and passion through volunteer and staff training on proper tree handling, pruning, planting, and watering techniques
  • Develops and delivers safety protocol training for backup personnel
  • Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment, such as aerial lift trucks, knuckle-boom loaders, and flatbed trucks, for efficient transportation to and from work sites with proper tool and equipment usage to preserve all assigned equipment
  • Responds promptly and effectively to emergency calls, including weather-related incidents, managing personnel and coordinating debris removal efforts

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and four years of related experience

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • 3 years arboricultural technical training
  • Qualified Line Clearance Tree Trimmer Certification, or ability to obtain within 1 year
  • Ability to demonstrate or obtain the following knowledge and certification:
    • Qualified Line Clearance Tree Trimming training and Electrical Hazard Awareness Program participation required
    • Working familiarity with and understanding of ANSI A-300 (Part 1) – 2001 Tree Care Operations
    • ANSI Z133.1 Standard, pruning, trimming, repairing, maintaining and removal trees, and cutting brush
    • Safety requirements:  OSHA 29 CFR, part 1910.269 Vertical Standard for Electrical Hazards

  • Arboricultural standards, practices, and techniques
  • Pruning and removing trees using climbing techniques and equipment operation including an aerial lift, articulating loader, brush chipper, stump grinder, front end loader and dump truck
  • OSHA and ANSI safety standards for field implementation
  • Proficiency in oral and written and communications
  • Using computer-based data entry software
  • Climbing and rigging knots, techniques and equipment
